Narrative Magazine: Let's Rant

Here's a good argument against dealing with Narrative Magazine, which charges people a "consideration fee" (boo, hiss) to submit pieces there. The piece is on , which describes itself as the "Internet literature magazine blog of the future."

Thank you for posting this. I got discouraged about submitting to Narrative Magazine myself after seeing how many "name" writers they publish; competition is fierce everywhere, let alone where the in crowd is famous. But I'll probably even start reading it again . . . because one of my essays they rejected was recently published by another big journal (after they also had had it forever). I love what Narrative Magazine publishes and will probably submit again!

Were you submitting to Readers' Narrative or paying the $20 reading fee? If you were paying for being considered, did they at least give you a personalized rejection letter, or was it the standard "Your submission does not meet our needs at this time"?

I think I'd entered a contest, and as I recall I only knew I'd been rejected by going to their status page.
