Narrative Contest Guidelines
http://narrativemagazine.com/shared/contest.php
(go to website for online entry instructions)

The Narrative First-Person Contest is open to all writers. We’re looking for works of fiction or nonfiction written in the first-person point of view in the following categories: short stories, short short stories, novel excerpts, essays, memoirs, and excerpts from book-length nonfiction. Entries must be previously unpublished, no longer than 8,000 words, and must not have been previously chosen as a winner, finalist, or honorable mention in another contest.

In seeking fiction and nonfiction written in first-person point of view, we are especially looking for works that transcend narrow self-interest and self-expression. We are looking for authors whose use of the first person demonstrates a sense of proportion and perspective, an engagement with the world beyond the self, for authors whose gifts of thought or feeling and of insight enhance a reader’s sense of connection and possibility. And, as always, we are looking for manuscripts with a strong narrative, in which the effects of language are intense and total. Reading the first-person narrator—the I of the story—we hope to find the most necessary, most intimate, most personal stories made universal.

Awards: First Prize is $3,000, Second Prize is $1,750, and Third Prize is $1,000. The prize winners will be announced in Narrative and will be eligible for publication. Additionally, ten finalists will receive $125 each. We’ll announce finalists in the magazine as well. All entries will be considered for publication.

There is a $20 fee for each entry. And with your entry, you’ll receive six months of complimentary access to Narrative Backstage.

Entries will be accepted between May 1 and July 31, 2008.

The contest will be judged by the editors of the magazine. Winners and finalists will be announced to the public by August 31, 2008. All writers who enter will be notified by email of the judges’ decisions.

We accept online entries only. We do accept simultaneous submissions, but if your entry is accepted elsewhere, please let us know as soon as possible (and accept our congratulations!). Online entry at
http://narrativemagazine.com/shared/contest.php

Entries should be formatted as follows: Double-spaced, with 12-point type, at least one-inch margins, and sequentially numbered pages. Please give the author’s name, address, telephone number, and email address at the top of the first page.

Memoir (and) Prize for Nonfiction
$500 Prize and
Publication in our Spring 2009 Issue.
http://memoirjournal.squarespace.com/contest-submissions/

Memoir (and) is an up-and-coming journal for the exploration of memoir as “the” genre of the 21st century. We are based in Sausalito, California, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge.

We strive with each issue to include a selection of prose, poetry, graphic memoirs, epistolary memoirs, narrative photography, lies and more. The editors particularly invite submissions that push the traditional boundaries of both form and content in the exploration of the representation of self, and are especially looking for graphic memoirs.Memoir (and) is available in print in over 600 bookstores in the U.S. and Canada, including Borders, Barnes & Noble, Hastings and independent bookstores.

Contest Guidelines

The reading period for the contest is May 1, 2008 through August 15, 2008.

Submit 10,000 words or fewer online using the Memoir (and) Submissions Manager, or by snail mail. Only one prose submission per person, or a maximum of five poems. If you are sending narrative photographic images, please limit yourself to a maximum of five. If you have a graphic memoir, send a low resolution jpg or tiff of some panels and a brief description.

Submit $10 contest entry fee online, or by check or money order.

Submissions marked “contest submissions” but without a $10 entry fee will be regarded as general submissions and considered for publication.

We do not accept previously published submissions; WE DO ACCEPT SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS.

We purchase one-time rights and pay with copies.

Pages have a way of becoming separated from each other like lively children. Yet we don’t think the writer’s name should be evident to our judges while reading. Therefore please use the following format:

- On the cover page: your name and contact information, and the entry’s title.

- On every page: the entry’s title.

- All pages numbered and double-spaced.

Be sure to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you want us to write back to you via snail mail about your submission.

Manuscripts will not be returned.

Entries must be postmarked between May 1, 2008 and August 15, 2008.

Send snail mail entries and entries fees to: Memoir Journal, P.O. Box 1398, Sausalito CA 94966-1398.

FAWLT MAGAZINE

FAWLT magazine (www.fawltmag.com) is an online, quarterly journal seeking short stories, poems, essays, and artwork that deal with human flaws.

Each issue of the magazine focuses on a single, undesirable characteristic, exploring such issues as: who is affected by it, its impact on individuals, in which circumstance it can be especially bad (or actually good), and any other aspect of the flaw that that may be worth investigating.

We seek previously unpublished prose, poetry, art, and photograph that incorporate these characteristics in funny or sobering ways. Ultimately Fawlt hopes to offer an entertaining look at human frailty and a serious consideration of some of our more unpleasant traits. Please do not send more than three prose pieces or five poems at a time.

We're now actively taking submissions for our next issue:
PERFECTIONISM
This issue will be launched online September 15, 2008.
We're also considering submissions for other faults including:
~ Apathy and Arrogance ~
However, as we are planning to release those issues in later quarters, our response to submissions in those categories might be slightly long in coming.
While we have no problem with simultaneous submissions, please notify us immediately if your submitted work is published elsewhere.

GUIDELINES

DEADLINE: For PERFECTIONISM: August 1, 2008. For all other faults: rolling submissions.

EMAIL: Please send to submissions to
fiction(at)fawltmag.com, poetry(at)fawltmag.com, or artandphoto(at)fawltmag.com (replace (at) with @), depending on your category. Please indicate, in the subject line, which flaw your work addresses.

Please note that if you wish to submit work to two different issues (apathy and arrogance for instance) you need to send us two separate emails: one for your apathy submissions and one for your arrogance submissions. As previously stated, don't forget to indicate which flaw your work addresses in the subject line of your email.

ATTACH: A cover letter.

IMAGES: May be sent via email as JPG or TIF files.

PAYMENT: While we're working on acquiring the funds necessary to pay our contributors, as of now, we can't offer any of that precious, precious lucre. Sorry.

We look forward to reading and viewing your work. Thank you for submitting to Fawlt Magazine.

Guidelines for the 2009 Narrative Travel Writing
Contest
http://www.transitionsabroad.com/information/writers/travel_writing_contest.shtml

TransitionsAbroad.com invites you to enter its 2009 Narrative Travel Writing Contest with a $500 first-place prize.

Professionals, freelancers and other talented travel writers are invited to write a travel narrative relating to the intrinsic educational aspects of meaningful travel. We are looking for evocative and engaging writing in which sensitive immersion in the country, the people, the food, the land, the art, the rituals, and the culture in general play the leading role in the writer's self-discovery and enlightenment. We are absolutely not looking for self-involved travelogues or diaries, but rather for a well-crafted and inspirational story which should appeal to those who have traveled independently overseas with open minds, sensitive souls, and empathetic imaginations.

The specific theme for this year's contest is "Travel in a Dangerous World." Many of our readers are independent travelers who are looking for travel ideas which take them to areas unspoiled by mass tourism, where they may meet and respectfully interact with local people who have not yet become cynical about the foreigners who come into their homes or lands. We are looking for stories written by authors who have taken a risk — or been told that they were taking a risk — when traveling overseas. How did you manage to stay safe even while engaging in this form of adventurous travel, which often involves finding oneself in remote areas of the world or in off-the-beaten-track areas of known cities and regions? One implicit question the articles should address is whether the world (at least that part of the world in which you have traveled) is truly more dangerous than it has ever been, or did you discover that governments and/or mass commercial media has exaggerated the threats for their own motives?

What we are not looking for are submissions that represent travel as a form of consumption and objectify the people of other countries or which involve "poverty tourism" or "poorism."

Accompanying photos which enhance the narrative are a plus, and we are open to photojournalistic approaches to the subject outlined above for this year's Narrative Travel Writing Contest. Please include an optional bio of 1-3 sentences with references to your websites, blogs, books and contact information.

TransitionsAbroad.com will publish the top three winners' entries as well as those of the selected runner-ups.

Contest Prizes
In this year's Narrative Travel Writing Contest, the first-place winner’s entry will receive $500 (USD), the second-place winning entry $150, and the third-place winner $100.

Any other articles selected as runner-ups will receive a $50 payment.

Who is Eligible
The Contest is open to professional, freelance and aspiring travel writers from any location around the globe.

How to Enter
Submit an original essay from 1,000 to 3,000 words. Supporting photos in .jpg or .gif format are welcome to illustrate the experience and are considered part of the essay submission. To enter the Contest, attach your essay in Word format or copy and paste it into an e-mail. Please include your full name, complete postal address and phone number. Please type "Narrative Travel Writing Essay Entry" in the subject description of the e-mail and send the e-mail to narrativewritingcontest(at)transitionsabroad.com (replace (at) with @). The Contest begins February 1, 2008, and all entries must be received by October 31, 2008. Transitions Abroad Publishing, Inc. will require first-time North American rights for all submissions which are accepted as contest winners and for publication. In addition, Transitions Abroad Publishing, Inc. will reserve the right to reprint the story in a future publication. The writer may republish the unedited submission as desired after initial publication on TransitionsAbroad.com. Editors of TransitionsAbroad.com will judge entries based upon the following criteria:
Sensitivity to the people and culture being
described
Ability to engage the reader
Literary quality
Winners will be chosen on or about November 15, 2008 and will be notified by phone, mail, or e-mail by December 1, 2008 for publication on January 31, 2009 due to the time required for all writers spanning the globe to receive payment.

Contest Terms
There is no entry fee required for submissions. Decisions of the judges are final. Transitions Abroad Publishing, Inc. is not responsible for late, lost, misdirected, incomplete, or illegible e-mail or for any computer-related, online, or technical malfunctions that may occur in the submission process. Submissions are considered void if illegible, incomplete, damaged, irregular, altered, counterfeit, produced in error, or obtained through fraud or theft. Submissions will be considered made by an authorized account holder of the e-mail address submitted at time of entry. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners – along with any others accepted for publication – will be paid by Transitions Abroad Publishing, Inc. either by check or Paypal as preferred by the author.
